1. CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK OUR PUPILS READINESS to write.
- Basic grammar article, singular/plural, subject verb agreement and punctuation.
- Do more formative tests after each lesson.
- Do detecting errors on the whiteboard, use LCD to ease to process. Give them a paragraph of five or six sentences with incorrect grammar. Then ask pupils to come up to the front and and correct the mistakes. Ask them to explain why they say its wrong. Make sure not too many different grammar topic at one time. As I used to do, the errors should be repeatedly used, I mean focus on the same issues for the errors in the paragraphs.
- Brainstorming activities - a composite picture and ask pupils to brainstorm 10 to 12 verbs from the picture in past tense or present according to your drilling. Then make phrases ( for GALUS pupils) apart from reading, this is my drilling for them. Write and write till they can write lots of simple correct sentences. When the GALUS could write, add in simple adjective. Varieties of simple prepositions to expand their sentences with a little expression and conjunction like the word AND.
- Be positive and do not give excuses. Don't Blame them but blame yourselves if they are still weak.
- Now its time to drill how to expand and enhance the sentences, compound and complex with infinitive and the root word usage after MODAL can, could, may or might and for future tense etc (do not teaching the basic grammar, its quite late), correcting them,YES!
- I teach my pupils the name of part of speech like what is preposition of time, conjunction etc. I want them to know what to be used and where, how and why.
- Lastly, the samples - should be pasted on the walls and printed out. Ask the pupils to read them in class and even during extra classes and of course during their leisure hours.
- BUT, samples of what ?
- Samples of the sentences with the correct part of speech which u are focusing on and make sure you underline them, samples of good writings or compositions on different themes in manila cards cards.( I suggest you exchange with friends, other English teachers for more ideas)
- For general knowledge practises....
- This is our biggest issue:
- DO WORD ASSICIATION PRACTICES. LET THE PUPILS OPEN THEIR TEXT BOOKS AND DO I -THINK map that is bubble pap
- Give words related to a topic....
- Let them refer to the text books year 4, 5 and 6 and they will learn up the words as they use it.
- Do this in groups (21st century Learning)
- Then one pupil will present.
- Then use wh + 1 h questions to write.
- TEACH OUR PUPILS HOW TO ASK QUESTIONS TO GET information to write about any topic.
- Drill them well with the skill as our pupils are weak in this.
